I hope everyone had a great break!! This post is a recap of some of the things we did throughout February and March.
Before we get into the recap, I wanted to say a big, heartfelt thank you to all of you for your support of our Div 1 student who is undergoing cancer treatment. They have received the gifts and were so grateful for our support. To Jodi, thank you for volunteering your time to support bringing together the gift basket - which turned into gift baskets, plural! - and to everyone who has donated to support the family, sent gifts, for our students who created cards - thank you, thank you, thank you to each of you. I was so thrilled our community was able to pull together to support in that way.
February began with diving into our literacy circle unit and students were tasked with juggling a few weekly assignments that went with it. This included weekly reading of a specific section of the book, and comprehension work that focused on different literature elements such as character, theme, summaries of events, and narrative structure. At the end of each week, students would meet with their lit circle team to hold a book club discussion about what happened in their book that week. We're currently working on our final project, so can ask your child about the book they read and about the character they're completing a biography on.
In math, we tackled decimal, fraction, and percentage conversions and calculations, learning the difference between these different types of partial numbers and how to turn one into the other. Students wrote their unit test near the end of February and achieved an excellent average of 81%! Well done, Div 1! With Ms. Sereduik, they also learned the ins and outs of circle geometry, from calculating circumference to calculating the area of circles.

For our App Development project, we finalized the app idea that we would be focusing on, and wrote a proposal to think through the different components of our app. Then, the exciting part - wireframing began!! A wireframe is a working prototype of an app that doesn't have any coding behind it. In other words, you navigate the app by pushing the buttons, but the features of the app - for example, a search function, wouldn't actually work... as in, you couldn't type in your own query. We were lucky enough to take in a presentation from Jason Trinh, an Apple Distinguished Educator from Ontario, who taught us to use the Keynote app to create our wireframes, linking our graphics together to make our apps look and feel like a real app - without having the programming skills to code an entire app! This has unlocked the ability for students to undertake a complete app design for the remainder of the year.
We also had our very first touchpoint with WGSS course selection in February. Mr. Juteau, one of the VPs from WGSS, and Ms. Ruffo, one of the Grade 8 counsellors, came in to share a TON of information with us about Grade 8 courses, available athletics and clubs, and information about how to register.
The Term 2 deadline and conference prep reigned supreme near the end of February, with conferences taking place in March. It was wonderful to see you all again, and to set new goals for the upcoming - and last! - term of Grade 7.
With all of this exciting stuff, it should be noted that there was a low point of this 6 week period.... our snow tubing field trip unfortunately got cancelled due to lack of snow! But don't worry, something else is on the way! We had a few challenges to overcome in planning, but think we've found a fun solution that the Grade 7s can enjoy together. More coming soon on that!

Welcome back!
