The first weeks of 2024 brought us new learning and LOTS of snow. Welcome to our recap for January!
This month, Division 1 students engaged with different texts, ranging from picture books to short stories, to set the tone for literature circle discussions. We worked on oral language skills such as active listening, asking leading questions that help to promote conversation, and ensuring everyone has a turn to share ideas. Students have now been placed in their literature circle groups for the remainder of the term, where we will be exploring a specific novel and diving into literary elements, such as characterization and theme. Weekly reading and assignments will be expected, so be sure to ask your child about their book!
We also have worked through various math units such as decimal, fraction, and percentage conversions as well as circumference and area of circles with Mrs. Sereduik. Another unit test will be coming up soon on decimals, fractions, and percentages, so watch out for that coming soon.
On January 29th, we had the opportunity to go to WGSS for Grade 7 Transition Day, where WGSS leadership students brought the Grade 7s through a series of activities and a tour to give them a taste of high school life. The next transition activity is planned for Tuesday, February 6th, when WGSS course planning will take place at our school.

Division 1 also started a new ADST project called "Develop the Future," where students will be moving through the design thinking process to conceive and "wireframe" their own original app idea individually or with a partner. This project is slated take run all the way to mid-June. We have started with exploring the purpose and intended audience of the apps that exist on the App Store, and problem-finding with potential users through empathy interviews. We have also been doing some coding on the side through Swift Playgrounds for iPad. In the coming week, project partners will be starting to support us - including the Career Education Council and Apple Distinguished Educators - to help us build up our idea, explore the wireframing and coding principals that would support our apps, and to learn how to share our idea like an entrepreneur. It's an exciting project and I can't wait to see the students' ideas come to life!
